The Toll house on Cader Road was built in the 18th Century for the purpose of guarding the approach into town. The toll keeper's viewing window can be seen in the right hand corner of the gable elevation, with the stone post for the tollgate adjacent. Each of the roads from the town was turnpiked at one stage, becoming extremely unpopular in Wales and causing riots in the 1830s.
